DIY Seasonal Throw Pillows

When we were first married, I got the idea in my head that I needed decor for every holiday. I started gathering knick-knacks that went with each holiday, spending money on non-essentials and taking up storage space on things that weren't used in our house a majority of the year. After the layoff, I decided not to do that and rather keep it simple and have decor that works year round, saving both money and space. I now add some seasonal things about three times a year. Christmas, obviously! The summer time is when I put out any and all patriotic items, and the fall.

I have an easy project for you today that will work with any holiday. I found these place mats at Walmart and thought they would be perfect for fall. Unfortunately they no longer sell these exact place mats but you can find something similar. What's important in the place mats is that they have a separate backing.

Supplies needed:

Place mats with backing

Seam ripper or scissors

Needle

Thread

Using the scissors remove the stitching from a small section of the pillow. Make the opening large enough for you to add the stuffing. You can see the small stitches here. I made my opening at the bottom of leaf where you can't see it as well when they're propped up on the couch.

Add your filling. For this leaf shape it was hard to get the stuffing into the leaf tips. I used a wooden skewer to force the filling into those small spaces. Stuff really full as the pillows will compress when sat on.

Once it's full, use your needle and thread to sew back up. I didn't have matching thread, but I didn't care as you can't see the thread when the pillows are on the couch.

That's it! Fluff and place around your home!

I found some turkey shaped place mats at Walmart, kinda like these, that I also made into pillows. I'd love to get some Santa shaped place mats for Christmas, but haven't had any luck finding some in my price range.

What I love about this project is that it's easy to personalize to your home's style or for any Holiday! It's also fast and fairly inexpensive depending on your place mat cost. Have you ever made your own throw pillows?
